The Coldest Heart

I've been wearing a properly massive amount of black in recent history, as I seem to do from time to time. But as it gets more and more chilly with each passing day here, I expect that the black clothing is an early indication of what to expect from me throughout the winter months. While I quite obviously go really eccentrically bohemian with my taste in the summertime, but for me it just feels like poor taste to do so in the winter unless, of course, you're Rachel Zoe and possess gigantic and warm vintage Dior furs and the like.
With no histrionics or exaggeration I can firmly state that I loathe winter with a fiery passion in my heart. But at the same time I see no reason why it should result in anyone dressing really infinitely poorly. Of course there will be the occasional day of taking no heed of form and instead focusing entirely on the function of not freezing to death or getting slush in your socks - one would have to be insane to not take such things into consideration...which, come to think of it, means I have seen a veritable ton of insane people in this city.
Nonetheless, a slip on the sidewalk ice here or there is a small price to pay to not look like the Michelin Man (seriously, what is up with those ridiculous floor-length puffer coats that people wear?! Can they really even be that warm?!)
Okay, I've officially gone off on a tangent, and as such I'm certain that those of my readers who live in wonderful perpetual sunny and warm places have no idea what I'm on about...and for that I sorely envy them. And, since there's no use in getting preemptively upset about the inevitable, I suppose I should just enjoy light-jacket-and-boots weather while we still have it.
So on another note, in regards to the recent nail polish inquiries I've received: it's called Just Groovy, made by O.P.I., and I'm seriously considering making it my signature colour. It's weirdly awesome because it's obviously quite distinctive, but at the same time seems to match and/or clash in an interesting way with most everything I own.

Blowing Down The Stylus

What a weekend! First and foremost, Darker My Love absolutely killed it on Saturday night and should officially be far, far more renowned than they currently are. The crowd seemed to really enjoy them though, so perhaps this tour means that they will become so...G and I did, after all, convince and assure a couple of attendees to purchase their latest LP while purchasing me a t-shirt at the concesion stand.
But whatever, I obviously can't really say for sure so what I do know is that I had a wicked good time dancing to their set and that my neck is in a bit of pain today, potentially as a result. Which worries me because such feeling begs the question: am I actually getting properly old? Eugh, changing the subject...
Sunday was spent in the exact lazy manner which I expected and required it to be. Mind you we did go for an super-extra-long long walk to run errands and I'm almost certain that I consequently incurred some type of heat stroke from the awful Toronto humidity (which seems to have finally subsided as of today, thank god), but at least I managed to not purchase anything in the shops for once! This quite possibly has something to do with the limitations which my chequing account is currently imposing on me, but I'd prefer to kid myself and say that it's a matter of self-control and frugality.
Oh, and parking lots are seemingly one of the best photo locations/hanging out spots in the world. The below picture is dare I say my favourite ever.

Hello Traveler

It's that really strange time of year when the seasons are middling and indecisive, and because of this one can get away with wearing a tweed houndstooth blazer with jean short-shorts out to dinner and drinks and not think twice about it. Personally I'm a fan of having this kind of meteorological freedom when getting dressed, and hope for it to never end. The rarely-used logical side of brain is telling me that this is an entirely irrational thing to hope for though, so I suppose I'm just going to have to make the most of it while I still can.

It is, after all, the end of another week and hence the beginning of a new weekend in a few short hours, and I must admit that I have a wickedly exciting one ahead of me. Darker My Love and the Dandy Warhols are playing tomorrow night and there's been such a concert drought in Toronto these past few months that I'm unspeakably excited to be going to see not one but two bands that I love. Otherwise I suspect that this weekend will consist of the same old stuff but, considering how absolutely crazily busy last weekend was, relaxing and doing what I want when I want should be a properly pleasant way to spend my time.
Thank you times a billion to every single person who reads and comments on Modern Guilt. It's kind of totally amazing, and I sincerely appreciate it with all of my heart. I wish you all a weekend as wonderful as the one I plan on having, and look forward to getting back on here and catching up come Monday morning...truly, you guys all make Monday mornings less dreadful than I ever considered possible!

P.S. Happy birthday to my mums today, who turns a year older but still somehow manages to look as though she's not aged in ten years, and inspires me on more levels than I can count every single time I see her.

Cold Roses

As you can see in the included photos, yesterday I went with what I consider to be the most fail-safe autumnal outfit of all time. As it became colder later in the day I added a thin-knit grey sweater under the blazer and a little hat, which is, bottom line, the beauty of wearing jeans and a blazer - there are so many different ways to style the look, but the basis of the look is so solid that I would imagine it to be quite difficult to go wrong. As such, expect to see many variations on this theme in the upcoming months.
So I definitely caved yesterday and did in fact stop by Urban Planet to pick up a pair of flat moto ankle boots. They're obviously not the most quality item in the world, but to be honest do the job really nicely for very little money spent. And yes, I know that it was just yesterday morning when I ranted about having too much junk in my crazy mess of a wardrobe, but what can I say...I have very little self-restraint when it comes to spending money, which I'm certain the friendly folks over at Visa absolutely adore about me.The fun did not stop at unnecessarily purchasing things yesterday, because G and I then made our way over to a friend's recording studio to muck about and create some electro-house tracks just for kicks. And yes, I'm being entirely serious. Mostly I'm just amused by the various effect controls with which I can make things sound like they came from outer space - a word of warning, never trust me to produce anything unless you're entirely willing to be continuously told that it doesn't sound spacey enough.
Mind you my obsession with making vast space noises amongst other people's actual producing skills took until 3 a.m. to complete, and as such I don't feel quite up to my usual energy level yet - nothing a Grande Bold and a brisk walk won't fix, which I'm off to get and do now.

Still I've Got a Flashbulb Head

I admittedly have a soft spot for the dumb-blonde genre of chick flick...but seriously, seriously, seriously, I have never ever seen a film as horrendously awful and plotless as The House Bunny. If you have not seen it I highly suggest that you never waste two entire hours of your life doing so as G and I regrettably did last night. The only solace I take in having gone to see this film (if it can even be called that) is that is gave me the chance to stop by my local Urban Planet which, as you may be aware of by now, I am mildly obsessed with. I can always count on good old UP to not disappoint, and yesterday evening was no exception: I found at minimum 20 items that I require in my closet as soon as possible. But speaking of closets, I've recently become inspired to do something about the absolute unorganized mess of mine before anything else enters it. Because in all honesty, anything that enters it as it stands will only be thrown about and lost within a week and a half. The fact that nothing is easy to find and that all seasons and types are kind of mish-mashed and jumbled together is making it increasingly difficult to dress creatively. I'm a big fan of the whole 'sound and organized living space = sound and organized mind' notion, and I believe it's high time for me to take action, so an Ikea trip may be in order today.
On a separate note, I've concluded that there is not much which doesn't go with the insane boots I was wearing yesterday. Socks have become a necessity basically overnight, and these thankfully go quite nicely with them as well as with bare feet - and in case I've yet to mention it, multifunctional totally works for me. They're also extraordinarily comfortable...and I'm a walker, meaning I on average I walk close to 10 kilometers a day (that's what you get for being a 20-something without a driver's license, hoorah!) and these boots can take it, meaning that they were indeed a clever and justifiable purchase.

Pinchroller

I've pretty much fully recovered from this past weekend thanks to yesterday's pizza eating and documentary watching with a small but effective dose of new Gossip Girl thrown in. This hoodie from the wonderful people over at Use Small Words is kind of absolutely perfect to wear on days such as this one, seeing as I feel extraordinarily comfortable but not like a total slob either which, as someone who is obviously obsessed with clothing, is an important yet tricky balance I've found. Alas, problem solved!
Fortunately for me, I've been looking forward to tights and jackets weather for a short bit of time now, so I still have this romanticized and wholly unrealistic view of autumn and winter in my head...I'm giving myself two weeks until I start crying for summer again. But in the meantime, I'm SO gladly all about black tights and layering.

Jacket: Le Tigre...originally purchased for G, but apparently it is too big on him at 6'3"- which in my inverted mind means just wonderfully slouchy enough for me!

Need a little time to wake up

The wedding took place at a gorgeous historical conservation area (which you can somewhat make out from the pictures included), and was in all honesty one of the most beautiful I've ever attended.

And the highlight of V-Fest was most definitely Oasis, though some inebriated dude decided to jump onstage in the middle of 'Morning Glory', tackle Noel and Liam (video included at the bottom of this post, the incident happens at around the 1:30 mark if you're interested), and therefore start one of the infamous Gallagher gig fights, which kind of ruined it for everyone because there ended up being no encore. Nonetheless, that incident included, the whole festival was a really enjoyable and unforgettable event.

P.S. We'll be back to the usual kind of post tomorrow!
