Wearing grey on the weekend...

It's hard to believe that the weekend is over already, as I spent the majority of it holed up in the lovely comfort of the apartment under a blanket with Cup-A-Soup in hand. It's safe to say that I'm feeling 99% like myself again, so any sacrifices made in my 'exciting weekend activity' time were justifiably made towards the greater good of not feeling like death warmed over for the rest of the week.
Today's photo set was taken yesterday on my first excursion out of domestic comforts all weekend. If I wanted to get all pretentious and philosophical about things I would say that I'm wearing all grey to represent the middling state of my health at this point in time, as I am feeling neither black nor white and instead residing, emotionally and physically, in an ambivalent and undecided state. Alas, I am not pretentious or [generally] philosophical when it comes to clothes, so what I'm wearing basically comes down to the fact that layering is necessary in the cold/these clothes are comfortable for a walk about town/I like the colour grey - and there you have it, my outfit inspiration happily has essentially nothing to do with anything at all!
To expand upon the subject of clothing a little bit further, as it is, for all intensive purposes, the driving force behind this blog, I completed a couple of wicked cool DIY projects this weekend while bored and couch-ridden. One of them will definitely make its appearance on here tomorrow, so stay tuned for that...I'm generally not so good at DIY, but this one turned out particularly awesome if I do say so myself. I'm still unsure as to how I feel about the other one I completed (it involved a bunch of silver paint and way too much time on my hands), but I'm certain it will make its way onto me at some point or another, wherein you can either laugh at my kindergarten-level painting skills or be impressed by my ingenuity....I'm somewhere between the two at the moment.
Wearing
The grey sweater is from Zara.
The grey dress thing is from a random Yonge Street shop. And I really need to stop buying so much stuff in such shops.
The grey cotton tights are Hue, and I have been veritably living in them lately. So. Darn. Comfy.
The pleather studded boots are initially from UP, and were DIY-ed (successfully) to be studded as shown.
My red satchel is Adidas.
My long black wool toggle coat is an Aritzia purchase from last year. I hate that I have to wear this thing every day again, but what can you do.

Take My Time

Last night brought about one of the most frustrating and, eventually, rewarding experiences of my life: putting together a seemingly impossible television console, the instructions of which were no doubt devised by one of the most sadistic individuals the furniture-building public at large has ever seen.
There were moments of terror at it crumbling before our eyes, moments of euphoria at our extremely infrequent and small success, moments of wanting to set it ablaze when the aforementioned successes turned out to be entirely wrong (meaning, of course, that the whole thing had to be taken apart...again) and consequently moments of crushing defeat which consisted of a few large glasses of wine and laying on the floor with my head between my elbows for a little while.

Alas, the project was an eventual success...albeit not until 2:30 a.m. As such, waking up ten minutes prior to groggily walking through the doors of my workplace for the day didn't result in my most magical or impressive day aesthetically speaking. I do, however, find it extraordinarily useful to have big men's sweaters and comfy trousers on hand for days like this because, as much as I often loathe wearing pants, there's really no beating the comfort and utilitarianism of a pair like these.
Excuse me while I go pop another Advil for the massive bump on my head (currently hiding underneath my bangs) which was incurred while attempting to screw useless and evil planks of wood together last night. But what's good DIY fun without a couple of scratches and bruises, right?

Bad As They Seem

So I've decided to steal G's plaid shirt for good after mucking about in it all day long today and hence realizing it to be the most comfortable, warm, lightweight and awesome article of clothing I've ever worn. I'm unsure as to how he's going to feel about this considering he probably likes it too, but then again what's the point of having a boyfriend with a majorly extensive collection of plaid shirts if not to take them out for yourself every once and a while?
This morning I woke up asking "is it still cold outside?" completely forgetting for a brief but wonderful moment that it will in fact STILL be this cold and colder for months and months to come. Does anyone have any good suggestions for tropical vacation destinations? The first time of the year I hear on the radio that it will be "minus-whatever temperature" is always a sad day, and this year I also plan for it to be the day I book a plane ticket off to someplace warm for a short while.
G and I are off to pick up a bunch of new furniture we impulsively bought over the weekend and, as far as impulse buys go, I suppose nice furniture is better than yet another dress of pair of boots that I don't need. Or not. I haven't purchased anything even remotely clothes related in about two weeks now and I'll be the first to admit that it sucks.

Immediate Undertaking

Hello again! So I'm getting really bad at this Monday thing apparently...and, while I don't believe in excuses, I attribute the blogging-Mondayitis I'm experiencing to the following factors:

a) the sun is going down early again...like, 6:00 p.m. early, and it's not even Daylight Savings yet. Je suis desole!

b) Work-work has been busy like whoa. And, at this point in time, they still pay my bills, so I kind of have to do what they say to a certain extent.

c) G and I are working on a number of other projects at the moment, including the Great Apartment Fix-Up 08, which are surprisingly time consuming.
Alright, alright, enough excuses, even I dislike listening to myself make them...in which case I'm not going to even to begin with, so I'll just go back to being properly consistent! Ah, it all makes sense now. Okay. Onwards and upwards...

Le Smoking tagged me in a short but sweet little questionnaire thingamabob and, since I completely adore her glamorous smoking photo compilations on a daily basis, I am going to complete it to the best of my ability.
Clothes Shop: thrift and vintage shops first and foremost, Holt Renfrew for my big purchases (which are occuring less and less since real 'adulthood' kicked in and I have actual expenses that need to be met), and Urban Planet, H&M, Zara, blah blah blah for everything else.
Furniture Shop: Good question, that's precisely what I'm attempting to figure out right now! Ikea is unavoidable and occasionally good, I adore Umbra and a little vintage Art Deco shop downtown, and craigslist probably trumps any furniture store out there considering the amazing deals and often great finds I've stumbled upon on there! You've got to love the internet.
Sweets: I'm honestly not a fan in general, but I don't mind a chocolate covered macadamia nut here or there I suppose.
City: Toronto, obviously. Vancouver is also wonderful. I definitely wouldn't say no to London (rather, the UK in general), Paris, Belgrade, or anywhere in California though.
Drink: If I'm out it's gin and soda water with two limes, the rest of the time I'm good with a nice glass (or a few) of red wine.
Music: this is a veritable Pandora's Box of a question, so for today I'm just going to leave it at proper rock n' roll.
TV Series: The Riches, How Not To Live Your Life, Gossip Girl, Footballer's Wives, LOST. Pretty standard stuff all in all.
Film: Difficult question, and one that I definitely cannot conclusively answer today.
Workout: I don't in the summer because I find it boring and redundant considering I walk eveywhere, but in the winter I'm quite partial to running.
Pastries: I don't like them. Except for cheese croissants, which when properly made are delicious.
Coffee: Venti Bold with a touch of soy milk.
I tag whoever feels up to completing this! I really do love you all which makes it impossible for me to deem some 'tagged' and others not.

Oh, and one last thing - because of my absenteeism in the blogosphere yesterday I will be posting yet another diatribe later in the afternoon, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Cold Roses

As you can see in the included photos, yesterday I went with what I consider to be the most fail-safe autumnal outfit of all time. As it became colder later in the day I added a thin-knit grey sweater under the blazer and a little hat, which is, bottom line, the beauty of wearing jeans and a blazer - there are so many different ways to style the look, but the basis of the look is so solid that I would imagine it to be quite difficult to go wrong. As such, expect to see many variations on this theme in the upcoming months.
So I definitely caved yesterday and did in fact stop by Urban Planet to pick up a pair of flat moto ankle boots. They're obviously not the most quality item in the world, but to be honest do the job really nicely for very little money spent. And yes, I know that it was just yesterday morning when I ranted about having too much junk in my crazy mess of a wardrobe, but what can I say...I have very little self-restraint when it comes to spending money, which I'm certain the friendly folks over at Visa absolutely adore about me.The fun did not stop at unnecessarily purchasing things yesterday, because G and I then made our way over to a friend's recording studio to muck about and create some electro-house tracks just for kicks. And yes, I'm being entirely serious. Mostly I'm just amused by the various effect controls with which I can make things sound like they came from outer space - a word of warning, never trust me to produce anything unless you're entirely willing to be continuously told that it doesn't sound spacey enough.
Mind you my obsession with making vast space noises amongst other people's actual producing skills took until 3 a.m. to complete, and as such I don't feel quite up to my usual energy level yet - nothing a Grande Bold and a brisk walk won't fix, which I'm off to get and do now.

Pinchroller

I've pretty much fully recovered from this past weekend thanks to yesterday's pizza eating and documentary watching with a small but effective dose of new Gossip Girl thrown in. This hoodie from the wonderful people over at Use Small Words is kind of absolutely perfect to wear on days such as this one, seeing as I feel extraordinarily comfortable but not like a total slob either which, as someone who is obviously obsessed with clothing, is an important yet tricky balance I've found. Alas, problem solved!
Fortunately for me, I've been looking forward to tights and jackets weather for a short bit of time now, so I still have this romanticized and wholly unrealistic view of autumn and winter in my head...I'm giving myself two weeks until I start crying for summer again. But in the meantime, I'm SO gladly all about black tights and layering.

Love is Noise

'Tis the season of my allergy to ragweed getting out of control and forcing me into bed with Claritin and a glass of water in hand at 8:30 p.m. last night. I generally dislike sleeping - the whole concept of it just annoys me, as I see no reason why it is necessary for myself and everyone else on the planet to be wholly unproductive for hours on end every single day of being alive, but such is the physiology of being human I suppose, so I'm just going to have to learn how to deal with it.
The one good aspect of getting a billion hours of sleep last night is that I didn't feel half-dead when I woke up this morning, and I was for once able to wake up bright and early without complaint. My head still feels swollen and puffy and gross mind you, but a Grande Bold and hashbrown managed to fix that right up. As much as people (myself included) might complain about Western civilization and the corporate powers that be, sometimes Starbucks and McDonald's really just get the job done better than anything else, and for that reason I cannot entirely fault them.
Same goes for Old Navy actually - this sweater-thing I'm wearing today was a recent kid's section purchase there for 10 bucks! It fits wonderfully, is warm but not too warm, is comfortable beyond belief and, in my opinion, totally freaking adorable. Along with this I got a rugby cardigan for an equally affordable price which I swear is the EXACT same as the one I was planning on purchasing from Urban Outfitters for $100. Can you even believe that? My recent consumer experiences honestly feel too good to be true.

I am off to enjoy a day of rest, relaxation and a pedicure (because if there's one beauty-related thing I really cannot stand it would be having gnarly feet). I am still uncertain as to what colour polish I want to go with - you may be able to tell, but I'm not really a neon kind of girl regardless of how "in" it is - but I'm sure I'll come to some satisfactory conclusion...any suggestions anyone?

If I found my way to Minnesoter...

Last night was in a sense no different than the past three days have been as yet again I wore black and white. Mind you I didn't notice this until G pointed it out to me immediately, at which point I pretty much shrugged and decided to give up...my subconscious is obviously trying to tell me something in that I am indifferently gravitating to non-colours. Perhaps this is my form of anti-rebellion against seemingly not having a summer this year in Toronto? It either rains or it's cold, but mostly it just rains....
Anyways, LJ was over and the rainy, super casual evening was spent in the apartment, drinking Seabreeze slush thingamabobs out of wineglasses and talking and dancing (as per the above action shot) being and photographing and eating Thai food. All in all, a pretty great way to spend any given weeknight in my books.
On another note, more wicked awesome photo locations will be coming up soon, as G and I found a veritable goldmine of grimy, magnificent urban scenery literally a stone's throw from where we reside. Small discoveries like this one are the reason why I could never not live in a city - while I don't have attention deficit or anything along those lines, I do grow bored quite easily and much prefer being surrounded by stimulus and possibilities to being surrounded by nothingness and stagnation. Not that any place which is not a city is stagnant and lifeless necessarily, it's just that I haven't been to such a place yet in my life (with the exception of rural South Carolina, which may be my favourite place on the face of the earth)...

All the Hurry and Wait

I spent the majority of my time this past holiday weekend reading real-crime murder mysteries and drinking white wine spritzers on the lounge chair below...
Yesterday a sense of normalcy returned to my life, what with being back in the city. It is unfair to refer to yesterday as 'normal' though, because it was so much better than what 'normalcy' indicates. Copious amounts of sangria, obtaining some impressive Primal Scream acetate and last, but definitely not least, not having to go to work all contributed in a significant way to one of the loveliest Mondays I've experienced in recent history.
G and I caught up with the charming, entertaining and just generally awesome LJ of (the equally awesome) NoGoodForMe and much photographed fun was had everywhere from Kensington Market to the Annex to downtown yuppie pubs. As such, my cowboy boots have finally made their debut appearance onto Modern Guilt - unreasonable walking shoes were simply out of the question yesterday, and these boots are a long standing favourite for pretty much any casual activity you can dream up (I am going to resist the glaringly obvious and painstakingly cheesy Nancy Sinatra reference I could make here.)
Life is back to normal today, but it's the good kind of normal that comes from having an enjoyable and diverse weekend combined with an adequate amount of sleep. I have many things to plan and figure out over the next few days, and as a result I may have some extraordinarily exciting news to be sharing very soon...

I can't tell you the way I feel because the way I feel is oh so new to me.

G and I spent the evening at a dinner and drinks thing at Hemingway's with some of our best friends in the whole entire world who we haven't seen in a few months. They're those middle-class jet setter types who have spent the summer thus far travelling Europe (enviably, they even attended Glastonbury!), and who I've never quite understood. How do people who aren't filthy rich manage this? Perhaps I'm just worse at saving and prioritizing my money than these folk, but somehow I don't even get how that is possible...I feel financially responsible and know that I make a decent enough income to theoretically be able to afford this, and yet I never, ever do. And yes, this is obviously to be added to the perpetually expanding list of "Things I Need to Work On".

Regardless, they're off for the West Coast in nine days, so the get together at one of the only restaurants I can bear to be present at in Yorkville (the pretension that runs amok in most is more than a little bit disconcerting to me) was highly enjoyable, though it did mean that G and I were not able to take pictures until it was entirely dark out, which is generally problematic...something or another about the necessary aperture of the camera at night combined with me not being able to sit still. It all worked out somehow though - according to G, the 'somehow' is his photographic prowess - and this may actually be one of my favourite sets of photos yet.
While this may not be the most creative or inspired of my outfits, I do praise it for its multi-functionality which, in my opinion, is an extraordinarily important aspect of what I'm wearing at any given time. I comfortably went to work, fought with Canada Post (for apparently losing these boots), grocery shopped, dined, drank and finally took these photos in an empty parking lot - such is the versatility and beauty of a good jean jacket paired with pretty much anything, but in this specific case a jersey sheath dress. I hereby give fair warning that there is surely a Jean Jacket Love rant in the near future of this blog...

Romper Stomper

The lack of posting this past weekend by no means indicates a lack of productivity or blog-related activity - mainly, I'm referring to shopping. Many other activities were had, but what I am most excited about are the insanely wicked sale items I encountered this weekend...which is pretty telling, considering I boated, drank, ate delicious food and generally did things that most 'normal' people would consider a great deal more awesome than finding a $4 romper in Old Navy's children's section. But I suppose this is merely an inescapable fact about the kind of person I am.

As per my excitement about the things I bought that I am veritable lust with (Who knows if it is love yet? Only time will tell), I am going to share a brief run-down of my consumerist experiences in an extended post which, in my opinion, more than makes up for my bad blogging ways:

1. Spring: To be perfectly honest, the majority of Spring's shoes are atrocious garbage that one might encounter in a really gross suburban Wal-Mart. But fate was on my side on Saturday morning, when one particular pair of lascivious tan wooden platform sandals caught my eye before I even noticed that they were marked down to $10. Even if I had hated them I probably would have bought them but, thanks to whatever universal power that was looking out for my best sartorial interests at the time, it was love at first sight and they have pretty much not left my feet since. Which, according to my mother, is pretty stupid and vain when I'm on a mossy, rocky and wet patch of lakefront property, but whatever.

2. Old Navy (Kid's): Thanks for your 'helpfulness' nosy Old Navy employees, but no, I do not require a gift receipt for my $9 worth of purchases! The aforementioned romper and the grey graphic printed t-shirt are for moi...because yes, I am a Large/Extra-Large child, which come to think of it actually sums up a lot about my existence on many levels. Regardless, the absolute perfection of the romper can quite honestly be blamed for the lack of outfit posts for the past couple of days: "Me in the Romper on a VIA train", "Me in the Romper on a Boat", "Me in the Romper Getting Stupidly Inebriated on a Boat", "Me in the Romper on a VIA train home"...yeah, you get the point. Any outfit posts would have been insufferably redundant, as I am certain the word 'romper' is coming to be throughout this diatribe of mine.
3. Goodwill: This place is leading me believe that I have guardian angel of fashion who resides in specific rack of the St. Clair & Bathurst Goodwill - which is kind of ironic, because there's totally a Salvation Army a block away where I rarely and/or never find anything awesome, and aren't they supposed to be the religiously-affiliated organization? Anyways, my posse and I trekked up here, as is becoming the Sunday ritual, and while it was not as fruitful a trip as last week for me, everyone came away with some enviable thrift scores which I am not going to disclose just yet, because to let the cat out of the bag too early would totally make some of the upcoming daily outfit posts less mysterious and exciting, y'know?

4. Joe: What a horribly misleading place Joe Fresh of the Great Canadian Superstore is. Little did we know how quickly "This is the best store in the entire universe ever" would turn into "Nothing has EVER looked this horrible on me in my life"/"I never want to try any clothing on again". Please do not be fooled as we were by Joe's seemingly harmless trendy-classic garments and awesomely low prices, dear readers, as to try anything on will only make you upset when you realize how awful looking you could potentially be if you were somehow forced into wearing a dress from Joe.

5. ???? (Chinatown): No, the shop was not a pretentious indie band named "????", I just have no idea what is was actually called. 9 solidly coloured, thin cotton tank tops for $7. That is all.

Hi-Skies.

I'm finding it quite strange that mid-July is feeling like autumn, save for a few brief poolside reprieves. It is perhaps the fact that I am not able to enjoy summer in the same way as I did when I was younger, considering I now spend the majority of my summer days in an air-conditioned office. So perhaps it just feels less summery...maybe, maybe not.

Regardless, I've been making use of the autumn-esque summer weather as much as humanly possible. Yesterday the result of this was prancing about some scaffolding in an alley downtown - lots of fun was had, though I did have to don some leggings for the occasion.

Underwhelmed

Function took precedence over form in this morning's outfit choice, as I knew I would be running around quite a bit more than usual at work and therefore decided against another obscenely short mini dress. This may be
one of the only times you will ever see me in jeans - I consider wearing pants to be one of the worst, most uncomfortable feelings in the world. They're restrictive and remind me of winter - not that I even wear them in the winter anymore to be quite honest, I've been all about opaque black Wolfords for the two winters past.

I will give pants some credit, though...they are potentially less dangerous than their crotchless counterparts in that they're not affected by wind, running or bending over. So I suppose both options are restrictive in different ways, and it comes down to the fact that I prefer one over the other. Hmm.

On another note, I'm surprisingly happy with the AA silver lame bra top. It's quite comfortable and, in my opinion, far less 'revealing' than a typical bra - that being said, I ensured that it wasn't peeking out of my shirt whilst at my moderately conservative place of work today by wearing a thin cardigan.
Oh, the sacrifices I make.

Tomorrow never knows what it doesn't know too soon.

So the AA trip was precisely as horrible as I expected it to be. Having to listen to the inane chatter of Torontonian hipster chicks who were behaving as though I was not a paying customer standing in front of them and listening to them drawl "I looove tri-bleeeend. I wish the sidewalk was made out of tri-bleeeendd" while watching my purchases be sloppily folded at a painstakingly slow pace was almost enough to make me want to run/vomit/say something catty. (run-on sentence much?)

But I held myself back and managed to make the transaction without any significant conflict....Go me.

Otherwise the day has been lovely. G got a new Pentax SLR to mess about with, so expect more (and better) pictures soon.

Don't You Evah...

Yet another sweltering day in the city.

I've been in an American Apparel-ish mood lately (meaning I've been wanting to wear loose white t-shirts pretty much all the time - G has had to stop me from going to work like this more than I'd like to admit to), regardless of the fact that I actually don't own a single article of anything from there. There is a legitimate reason for my AA avoidance: I loathe even looking at the spandex-clad, indier-than-thou salespeople, nevermind being forced into awkward communication with them. These people are very much the reason why I hate Toronto's nightlife scene. I'm so sick of the absurdity of a 'scene' at all to be quite honest, but the AA salespeople scene which seemingly dominates this city is by far the most obnoxious and insufferable.

Now that my rant is complete, I will admit that I have been lusting over these skirts (above) for months, as well as some AA superfine jersey racerbacks. It's not that I wouldn't purchase these items elsewhere - G has continually suggested Chinatown and I have continuously searched there, albeit to no avail. But I have a thing for wardrobe basics - as per yesterday's Outfit Du Jour post re: easy dressing, and it's high time for me to get some new ones. Resistance is futile.

You were telling me how this ain't no rodeo town...

I came down with something on Sunday evening and did not go into work yesterday, hence the lack of an outfit of the day posting. It would have been a picture of me looking like death with shorts and one of my boyfriend's old t-shirts on anyways, so it's for the best for everyone I believe.

Today I was not quite as unlucky with the being ill thing, but was nonetheless not feeling the most creative I ever have when getting dressed and - ta da, surprise, surprise - went with the old standby: a sheath dress, my love for which knows no bounds. Perpetually flattering, and appropriate, sheaths are the key to what I like to refer to as "one-stop dressing". As much as I love the complexities and intricacies of fashion and style, I'm also a huge fan of ease and as little thought necessary as humanly possible re: what to wear when waking up at 7 a.m. for work. With a sheath, getting dressed is as follows:

a) pull sheath over head

b) pull on shoes

= DONE

c) -optional- jewellery, hair, accessorize, blah, blah, blah
Isn't it lovely?
